Eyelids

A common plastic surgery operation is eyelid surgery. Both young and older people are having this operation.

Younger people most often do this due to remove excess fat on the lid and under eye area.

More mature people most often have an excess of skin on both their upper and lower eye area.

The excess skin on the upper eyelid can be caused by a decrease in the skins elasticity that happens with time and the aging process which causes the skin to sag. In addition, a lowering of the forehead and eyebrows may have also happened. In that case, you should consider having surgery to lift the forehead/eyebrow together with the eyelid operation.

Operation

In the operation room, the operation area is washed clean by one of our operating nurses. Then the plastic surgeon will mark the eyelids with surgical ink. This is because the surgeon should know how much skin he has to remove.

After this he will apply a local anaesthetic. With upper eyelid surgery, excess skin is removed but also some fat deposits can also be removed.

Under the eye, mostly the fat deposits are removed with a minimal amount of skin removed. The operations take about 45 minutes.

Complications and Risks

The risk for complications is minimal with a possibility for some asymmetry between the eyes. The risk for infections is small and can easily be guarded against.

Convalecent/ After operation

After the operations you will go to your room at the clinic and rest for a few hours before you go home.

It is important that you lie on your back with your head raised high. This is to reduce swelling. You may even put a cold compress over your eyes.

Pain after the operation is usually minimal and there is no need for pain relieving medicine.

Dark sunglasses are good to take with you so that you can wear them when you leave the clinic. Black and blue marks and swelling after the surgery usually disappear after 5-10 days.

Avoid using contact lenses for the first two weeks after surgery because swelling may make it difficult to remove the lenses. In addition, take it easy the first weeks to avoid additional swelling.
