Nose

The nose is very important to your appearance. Even a small change can give a desired result. Form and shape are to a certain extent genetically based.

For a total rhinoplasty you may need to have the procedure done in two steps: A primary surgery and a complementary surgery that usually focuses on the tip of the nose.

Usual desires are to lower the bridge of the nose, or reduce the width or shorten the length of the nose. We use several different methods, which are decided upon based on your individual wishes and possibilities.

The Operation

In the most cases the incisions are done on the inside of the nasal opening. Usually this is combined with a few incisions on the outside. You will discuss this together with the surgeon.

The operation will usually be performed under general anaesthesia and will take approximately 1-2 hours.

When your operation is done, your nose will be taped to connect the new bone and broskskeleton ligaments??? which have been altered during the operation.Sometimes a cast placed over the tape for the first week after your surgery. This will help to decrease the swelling and to some extent reshape the nose.

Complications and Risks

The healing process is different for everybody. If bleeding and additional swelling occurs, it may take extra time to heal. This may lead to less than perfect result as one wished, and a second operation may be necessary to reach the desired result.

An infection can always occur with any operation Since blood circulation in the nose is generally good, infection rarely happens. If it does, it will be treated with antibiotics.

Loss of feeling in the tip of the nose when you touch it may disappear for a couple of months after the surgery, but it will normally come back.

Convalecent/ After operation

After the operation you should stay still and rest for at least a couple of hours with the head elevated. This is to avoid bleeding and swelling.

When the anaesthetic wears off, the pain will be diminished with a mild painkiller. After the operation your nose can feel stuffed for up to six weeks. Bruising and swelling around the eyes is not unusual and will disappear usually during the coming week.

After 7-10 days you will visit the clinic again and the sutures and the bandage will be removed.

Physical activities, such as sports, are to be avoided during the following four weeks.

You should not blow your nose or put in it your fingers as this may cause the nose to bleed.

Dried blood in the nostrils may be carefully removed by using a q-tip cotton swab moistened with lukewarm water. Vaseline is also possible to put in the nose to help removed the dried blood in the nostrils.

The result of the operation cannot be seen until the swelling has disappeared after 6-12 months.
